Natan Elkanovich

Natan Elkanovich was born in 1966 in Moldova (former USSR) in the city of Orgeyev.  In 1976 he emigrated with his family to Israel and still lives and works in Israel until today.  After secondary school, he studied fashion design at Shenkar College of Engineering & Design where he received his Bachelor of Design Degree.  Since 1995, Natan has worked as a senior costume designer in the Israeli cinema and television industry, for which, he was awarded with 4 Israeli academy awards, for best costume design.

Ever since painting had become an integral part of his life, Natan began developing his unique painting technique; in which he mix all kinds of plastic materials in different quantities, which include, among others, silicon and acrylic, and sprinkles them on the canvas. That creates 3-D texture on the surface. Sometimes he adds Swarovski Elements and all kinds of glitters to the end result. This technique is 100% hand made by Natan, and there is no machinery involved in it.

In addition to the paint brush, Natan also uses kitchenware and other tools in creating a painting. This originates from the deep kitchen roots embedded in him from early childhood. He recalls: “Most of my time after school was shared with my Mom in our kitchen. She was an excellent cook and I used to sit with her there, talk with her, do my homework, draw in my sketchbook, help her with all the cooking, decorate the food before service, making little art works from food by using variety of kitchenware..”

Natan`s motto in life is love, appreciation, respect and gratitude for people and the environment in which he lives, and he illustrates this in his art.  In his words: “I was always entranced by people and I consider myself a humanist. What interests me in particular is the positive side of human beings. I’m not interested in dealing with hate, envy, wars, anger and the rest of the negative aspects of people. I was always driven by love; love to the family, to friends, to making, to nature and its surroundings. And maybe because of that, when I paint, I choose to emphasize those positive aspects of humanity, like love, yearning, nostalgia, longing, appreciation, honor and gratitude.”

Natan creates portraits of famous people or figures, and homages of beloved paintings, which have influenced his life deeply and had a long lasting impact on him.  Through their influence on philosophy and popular culture, by painting them, Natan expresses his respect for them and cherishes their great impact on his world.

Natan`s paintings are exhibited and sold at prime galleries all over the world, and they are part of numerous private art collections.
